Primary Memory

In this tutorial you will learn all about the Primary Memory, what is primary memory? Different types of primary memory, you learn all about the computer primary memory, what is Random Access Memory (RAM) and What is Read Only Memory (ROM).

What is Primary Memory?

Primary Memory holds only those data and instructions on which computer is currently working. It has limited capacity and data is list when power is switched off. It is generally made up of the semiconductor device. It is a volatile memory.

The two types of Primary Memory are classified as; –

  • Random Access Memory (RAM)
  • Read Only Memory (ROM)

Random Access Memory (RAM)

RAM is specifying as Random Access Memory, RAM is the internal memory of the CPU for storing data, program and result of the program. It is read or right memory which stores data till the machine is working. Some types of RAMs are Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM), Static Random-Access Memory (SRAM), Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory (SDRAM), etc.

Types of Random Access Memory are;

Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) –

It is the type of Random-Access Semiconductor Memory that store each bit of data in a memory cell. Dynamic memory must be constantly refreshed, or it loses the contents. It does not need to be refreshed like a DRAM.

Static Random-Access Memory (SRAM) –

SRAM is faster and less volatile than DRAM but it requires more power to run and is more expensive, it does not need to be refreshed like a DRAM.

Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory (SDRAM) –

A Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory SDRAM is a type of DRAM that can run at much higher clock speeds, SDRAM has a synchronous interface, whereby changes on control inputs are recognized after a rising edge of its clock input, the clock signal controls the stepping of an internal finite state machine that responds to incoming commands.

ROM (Read Only Memory)

ROM stand for Read Only Memory, its function is to stores data permanently on personal computers (PCs) and other electronic devices, it performs major input or output tasks and holds programs or software instructions, it is non-volatile memory.

The various types of ROM are Masked ROM, Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM), Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory (EPRPM), Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) etc.

Types of of Read Only Memory are;

Masked Read Only Memory (MROM) –

The Masked ROMs is very fast memory were hard-wired devices that contained a per-programmed set of data or instructions. These kinds of ROMs are known as Masked ROMs which are inexpensive.

Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM) –

The programmable Read Only Memory is a form of digital memory. It can be modified only once by a user. The user can buy a blank PROM and enter the desired contents using a PROM program.

Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM) –

The EPROM can be erase by exposing it to ultra-violet ray. EPROMs have a Quartz window in the package to expose the chip to UV ray light. They were widely used as the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) ship in computer motherboards.

Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPORM) –

The EEPROM is programmable and erased electrically. It can be erased electrically. It can be erased and reprogrammed about ten thousand times. Both erasing and programming take about 4 to 10 milli seconds. They were also used as BIOS chips.

So, in this tutorial you learned all about the Primary Memory, Primary Memory include ROM and RAM, and you also learned different types of the Random Access Memory and Read Only Memory.

Generally I do not read post on blogs, but I would like to say that this write-up very forced me to try and do it! Your writing style has been amazed me. Thanks, quite nice post.
